Northern Sky in SO:ME Space at South Melbourne Market

We spoke with graphic designer and art director Maria Mitropoulos about Northern Sky, her collection of crystal pieces inspired by her love of fashion, nature, design and colour.

Tell us a bit about Northern Sky. What makes your label unique?

A pop of colour, a burst of energy. Northern Sky’s bewitching crystal collection is a one-of-a-kind range of wearable fashion and healing pieces for the modern crystal lover. I aim to create fresh, unique, statement pieces focusing on the natural beauty of gemstones and raw elements, a collection of inspiring pieces. The Northern Sky range will bring harmony and zen to each wearer or home. Each one of a kind, handcrafted design, be it jewellery or crystal air plant, is made with a focus on creativity, colour and design. The crystal designs come with a healing properties card, so customers can go home with knowledge of the crystal and its qualities.

When and why did you start Northern Sky?

The Northern Sky Crystals Collection began with a love of healing, nature, colour and above all unique crystals. The range of fun pieces began 2 years ago, when I found a gap in the market for modern, boho inspired statement jewellery pieces in which modern crystal lovers could wear. I wanted to use my creativity and experience with colour and design to create unique designs that would inspire and create happiness to each wearer. I felt the need to use gorgeous crystals I would find along my travels, to create these individual designs.

What was the inspiration for your current collection?

Northern Sky always has a focus foremost on majestic crystals. Each crystal is carefully selected for its properties, colours and form. Three things I love and am passionate about. Beautiful colours in nature and landscapes, the beach, design and fashion always inspire me. The current season collection for A/W 16’ has a modern boho take which includes feathers and natural elements and of course loads of colour.

Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your background?

I’m a graphic designer/art director and have been working in this industry for over 11 years. I have a Bachelor of Design and hands on experience in visual merchandising. Northern Sky brings together all my passions, an interest in natural healing for the mind, body and soul and love for crystals & colour & being creative. I creates all my pieces here in Melbourne.

What other designers are you into at the moment?

I love a bit of fashion, Gorman, the colours and patterns in the designs are always beautiful and creative. Romance was Born, Spell, and classics like Chanel for effortless style and beauty.

What else are you inspired by right now?

My inspirations are everywhere. In design, nature, music and art, colours and textures also inspire creativity.

Why do you want to come into SO:ME Space, and what are you hoping to get out of your time in the space?

As an emerging designer, I feel SO:ME Space attracts a mix of shoppers inline with my product style. The creative space will allow me to showcase my brand, Northern Sky, to experiment and attract new customers, whilst helping to grow and expand.

What was the professional highlight of your past year? What work are you most proud of?

Since Northern Sky made its debut at the Finders Keepers SS15 Melbourne, the range has expanded to include colourful embroidered patches and unique feather pieces, new colour palettes and copper techniques, yet remaining true to its value, creativity and style.

What advice do you have for people wanting to start their own store or label?

“Don’t give up, don’t take anything personally, and don’t take no for an answer.”Sophia Amoruso. This says it all. Keep at whatever you love, and don’t give up!

What does the future hold for Northern Sky? Where are you headed next?

Northern Sky aims to expand into homewares and fashion whilst remaining true to its style and values. I’m passionate about creating new designs and product for my expanding customers.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt
